ETC Ion Xe troubleshooting
The ETC Ion Xe problems live-event techs bring to Ask Roadie most (also called Ion, Ion Xe 20, IonXe). Pick your symptom, or describe your own in plain words, and get the likeliest fix first, with the manual page when there is one.
Common Ion Xe errors & problems
What techs run into most, and what's usually behind it. The step-by-step fix for your exact unit is in Ask Roadie.

Console boots only to the Eos Shell (ECU) and never launches into Eos
Likely cause: The Shell is the launcher layer; the console stays in it when the selected software cannot start, so selecting a valid build or reinstalling restores normal launch.
- Step-by-step fixGet the fix →
Console displays "Searching for Master" and will not take control
Likely cause: Eos synchronization requires a single designated Primary; without one reachable on the network, other devices sit in the "Searching for Master" state.
- Step-by-step fixGet the fix →
Console fails to boot or hangs immediately after a software update
Likely cause: Re-running an identical-version installer can leave the software partition in an inconsistent state; reinstalling from an archived build restores a clean, bootable install.
- Step-by-step fixGet the fix →
Console is not outputting DMX / not talking to the lights
Likely cause: Eos gates all output behind the Grand Master and playback faders, and treats every local/network port as an independently addressable universe, so a down fader or a port/universe mismatch produces zero output at the fixtures.
- Step-by-step fixGet the fix →
Faders in an Ion Xe / fader wing bank flutter or behave erratically (jumping levels, ghost moves)
Likely cause: The fader bank is read through a shared multiplexer; a single bad pot corrupts the multiplexed stream so every fader reports garbage.

How to update Eos Family software / firmware on the Ion Xe and what the current version is
Likely cause: Console and face-panel firmware are bundled inside the single Eos software installer, so running the installer from the Shell updates both the OS-level software and the attached hardware firmware.
- Step-by-step fixGet the fix →
Ion Xe will not boot / hangs on startup
Likely cause: Eos scans USB and attached face-panel hardware at boot; a bad flashdrive or a wing that enumerates before the console can halt the startup sequence.
- Step-by-step fixGet the fix →
MIDI/SMPTE timecode, MIDI Show Control, or analog/serial (RS-232) inputs will not connect directly to the console
Likely cause: Show-control I/O beyond simple contact closures is offloaded to gateways so it can be distributed on the network; the console itself exposes only the D-Sub contact triggers.
- Step-by-step fixGet the fix →
Older dimmers or DMX electronics misbehave / flicker, or Net2 nodes drop out when RDM is enabled
Likely cause: RDM discovery packets are interleaved into the DMX stream; devices that do not understand RDM choke on them, and a slower frame rate gives marginal cabling more timing margin.
- Step-by-step fixGet the fix →
Rig snaps to black or fixtures hold last look when the Ion Xe goes offline / outputs DMX 0 while offline
Likely cause: A console that is offline is no longer transmitting DMX frames, so downstream behavior is dictated by each fixture's data-loss setting rather than by the desk.
- Step-by-step fixGet the fix →
Trying to feed external DMX INTO the Ion Xe (use it as a DMX input) does not work
Likely cause: ETC designed the local ports as output ports; DMX-in is handled by gateways that convert incoming DMX to network data the console can consume.

How Ask Roadie helps with the Ion Xe
- 1. Pick the ETC Ion Xe. It's already in the list.
- 2. Describe what you're seeing. In your own words, or the error code off the screen.
- 3. Get the likeliest fix first. Steps in order, the manual page when there is one, and a note when other techs have confirmed it.
- 4. Still broken? Tap 👎 and it keeps going from where you left off.
